Hingham Historical Society Board Director and Former School Superintendent Dorothy Galo has made a $25,000 donation to the Hingham Historical Society’s 2020 Hingham History Fund. Galo’s gift will be used by the Society as a grant match to encourage other donors to give before year end.

A lifelong resident of Hingham, Dr. Dorothy Galo served for over 50 years in the Hingham Public Schools as a teacher, administrator and as Superintendent.  In her retirement, she has chosen to support The Hingham Historical Society as a dedicated volunteer on the Board of Directors leading the Society’s Committees for Facilities and Strategic Space Planning. With a major gift to the Hingham History Fund, Dorothy has helped underwrite the Society’s operations in a particularly challenging year and strengthened the Society’s mission to collect, preserve and promote Hingham history.

“The magnitude of Dr. Galo’s impact on the Hingham Historical Society cannot be understated” said Deirdre Anderson, Executive Director of the Society. “Dorothy was always an active member in the Society attending our programs and annual meetings when her busy schedule allowed. When she retired from the Hingham Public Schools and joined our Board as a Director, her leadership and work ethic immediately strengthened our organization. From first rate committee work, to hours of volunteer time and now this major gift, Dr. Galo’s legacy in Hingham continues to make history.”

Society Registrar and Collections Manager Michael Achille added “We love to celebrate that four of the six members of our small staff are all graduates of Hingham High School and went on to become history or social science majors. Dorothy’s own son, Teddy – also a Hingham High School graduate - directs the award-winning Boston Tea Party Museum and Ship. What a legacy for a Harvard trained mathematician!”

The Society hopes Dr Galo’s generous gift will encourage community members interested in preserving Hingham history and celebrating civic engagement to donate. The Society is accepting donations at hinghamhistorical.org/give or by calling 781.749.7221 x1 or sending a donation to PO Box 434 Hingham, Massachusetts 02043.
