For the first time since 2009, the Hingham Harbormen are the Island Queen Buddy Ferreira Classic Champions. The annual tournament held in Falmouth is a highly competitive February vacation event of some of the top hockey programs in the state. In addition to Hingham, other participants this year included Falmouth, Boston College, Arlington Catholic, Austin Prep, Reading, Archbishop Williams, and Duxbury.
Hingham kicked off the week long tournament last Saturday with a 3-1 win over Arlington Catholic. Senior Connor Walsh and juniors Ace Concannon and Aidan Brazel scored for the Harbormen. The semi-finals was a match-up versus Reading. After junior Charlie Evens scored in the final minutes of the second period, Reading tied it up late in the third to send the game into OT. Junior Billy Jacobus scored on a Concannon pass to secure the win. Hingham's opponent for yesterday's championship game was Austin Prep. AP opening the game with a goal less than a minute in. Hingham responded with five unanswered goals. Goals from senior captains Bobby Falvey(2) and Sean Garrity, in addition to Walsh, senior Shay Crean, and junior Chase McKenna each added their own, gave Hingham the 6-1 win. Senior goalie Luke Merian started all three games only allowing three goals the whole tournament.
Merian's performance earned him a spot on the All-Tournament team. Falvey took home the Tournament MVP award for his outstanding performance. They post-season kicks off next week. The Harbormen are one of the top D1 schools in the state and their seeding and opponent will be deteremined soon.
