On Sunday, October 20th, Hingham High Crew will once again send a top contingent of rowers to compete in the largest rowing competition in the world, the Head of the Charles Regatta. This year, four Hingham boats were selected to compete in the prestigious event, and the athletes have been training very hard in order to give their best performances. The Hingham entries and times are as follows:
Event #48: Women’s Under-17 4+ @ 8:19 AM
Event #50: Women’s Youth 8+ @ 9:02 AM
Event #52: Women’s Youth 4+ @ 9:56 AM
Event #55: Men’s Youth 8+ @ 11:13 AM
There are a number of fantastic viewing locations along the Charles for watching the races, but some of the best spots are the FALS Bar near the finish line (beer, wine, and cocktail garden, the Iconic Eliot Bridge, and Reunion Village. Viewers can typically recognize Hingham boats by the red hulls, solid red oars, and red and white uniforms.
The Hingham Crew Team generally sends a few boats each year to compete in the Head of the Charles. This year, Hingham is sending 28 athletes – in the girls 8+, the boys 8+, and 2 girls 4+ boats. The weather reports for the weekend are absolutely ideal for fall racing.
In the Women’s Under-17 Fours race at 8:19 AM, Shayla St. Croix will cox stroke Bianca Kiley, Rose Lovendale, Annie Sargent, and bow seat Stella Gutierrez.
At 9:02, the Women’s Youth 8+ begins with coxswain Audrey Smith, stroke Emme Beaudoin, Natalie Shaw, Louisa Orth, Thea Migliccio, Ava Sugrue, Eliza Powers, Sophia Santarelli, and bow Lynnayah Ryan.
The Women’s Youth 4+ at 9:56 AM will feature coxswain Emily Gu, stroke Madeline Kittinger, Izzy Wagner, Jane Melia, and bow Maddie Owens.
Lastly, at 11:13 AM, the Men’s Youth 8+ with coxswain Lucas Mangili, stroke Hanley Stroka, Walker Bogen, Lachlan Knies, Trevor Steiner, Will Barry, Arlo Maxwell, Slater Fairfield, and bow Nicholas Mangili takes to the water.
HHS boats finishing in the top half of their respective races will automatically qualify Hingham in the same event at next year’s 2025 Head of the Charles. All other entries will be selected by lottery.
The world’s largest two-day rowing event, the Head of the Charles features 11,000 athletes rowing in 1,900 boats from all over the world. Each year, the event draws more than 400,000 spectators to the shores of the Charles River to watch some of the best rowing along the very challenging three-mile course as it winds its way upstream. The course features seven bridges, and plenty of curves, requiring a high level of skill and discipline from the athletes.
On Friday, Hingham’s rowers and coxswains will be participating in a run-through on the course to ensure that they are prepared for the challenges along the waterway. Next Sunday, come and check out this historic event and cheer on Hingham High Crew!
