On May 31 Masses resumed at both Resurrection and St. Paul churches in the Hingham Catholic Collaborative.
“Coming together for the first time in ten weeks on Pentecost, the birthday of the Church, was especially meaningful, said the Rev. Thomas Nestor, pastor. “For Catholics, the Eucharist is everything. Not being able to gather to celebrate the Eucharist was a spiritual hardship for many.”
Public Masses and other sacraments in the Archdiocese of Boston stopped March 15 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Groups of 10 or fewer could gather for prayer for two hours daily at both Hingham churches. In addition, the collaborative live-streamed Masses and other services for viewing on its Hingham Catholic Facebook page.
The collaborative’s first Mass since the shutdown was held on the lawn of Resurrection Church, where all services at that church will be held for now.
“Outdoors was the perfect place to celebrate Pentecost,” said Fr. Nestor. “The gathering powerfully evoked the first Pentecost when Jesus' disciples were praying in a small upper room.
“The same Holy Spirit moved among us as we prayed in the field behind Resurrection and offered the Eucharist, Jesus' own sacrifice,” he said. “It was a blessed gathering.”
