Sadie Cosman didn’t allow a puck to get by her in the shootout and Emmy Sibley scored the winner in the 7th round to send the Hingham Girls Hockey (HGH) U10 Red team past Waltham, 2 -1, in the Massachusetts Girls 10U Tier III State Tournament championship game Sunday at Phillips Academy in Andover, MA.
After a thrilling National Anthem from Boston Bruin’s singer Todd Angilly, Waltham led off the scoring with a power play goal at the 8:24 mark in the second period. Then Hingham’s Madison Newman tied the game for Hingham with 2:27 remaining in the second period with an assist from Ainsley Matthews. Regulation time ended at a 1 – 1 draw.
After a thrilling overtime where both teams nearly ended the game, the ensuing shootout produced no goals after Sadie Cosman stone walled all 7 Waltham shooters. Emmy Sibley completed Hingham’s miraculous run to their first State Championship in the 7th round with a blistering wrist shot over the Waltham goalie’s left shoulder into the top corner.
“This was a truly special team that improved every week throughout the season. They came a long way and peaked at just the right moment,” shared Whit Matthews, HGH U10 Red Head Coach. “Goalie Sadie Cosman was outstanding in all five games. Her Sunday performance was something you could only dream of. First, a shutout in the semifinal win in the morning; and then in the Championship game to stop every shot in overtime followed by all seven straight shootout attempts – she was a brick wall.”
The U10 Red team consisted of players from left to right; Emmy Sibley, Adalae Jiranek, Fiona Carli, Grace Bigelow, Tess Merrill, Brooke Lewis, Sadie Cosman, Ainsley Matthews, Elle O’Brien, Micayla McGrath (of Scituate), Ellie Jenison, Lexi Moravek (of Cohasset), Madison Newman (of Scituate), Delaney Johnson, Claire Wheelihan, and Taegan Gill. Coached by Whit Matthews, Lee Jenison, Brian Lewis, & Kevin Gill.
“Overcoming adversity has become a developing theme for our team all season. The girls have played in several elimination games, going undefeated in all of them and often coming from behind to win in absolutely dramatic fashion,” shared Kevin Gill, HGH U10 Red Asst Coach. “It was only fitting that they overcame another deficit in the State Championship Final and won after a full overtime and seven-round shootout!”
The Hingham Girls Hockey program consists of several age levels of play from Learn to Play, U8, U10, U12, U14 and U19 groups.
Any girls interested in joining program are encouraged to come to evaluations starting next week on Monday, March 25th. Full evaluation details can be found here https://www.hinghamgirlshockey.org/evaluations.
