The Hingham Historical Society, a private member and donor supported nonprofit, announces its Fall programming, and invites the community to a variety of events to commemorate and expand our understanding of the history of Hingham and the region. Thursday, September 8th at 7PM - Hingham History Maker event with 2022 Guggenheim Award recipient Jerald Walker. Walker, a Hingham resident and Professor of Creative Writing and African American Studies at Emerson College will be honored as a Hingham History Maker and give a reading and sign copies of his latest book, How to Make A Slave and Other Essays. This program is free and open to the public and offered in partnership with the Hingham Unity Council.
Saturday, September 10th from 1PM – 2:30PM – Free guided walking tours during Hingham’s first Harbor Celebration. Meet at the Harbor Bandstand for thirty-minute guided tours of Hingham’s inner harbor. In partnership with the Town of Hingham, Hingham Maritime, the Lions Club and Friends of Hingham Harbor.
Friday, September 16th at 10AM – Colonial Story Time for preschool children begins at the Hingham Heritage Museum and continues every Friday morning through December. Tickets go on sale in early September.
Thursday, September 22nd at 7PM – The South Shore Country Club: Celebrating 100 Years in the Hingham Community; A Conversation and Toast at the Hingham Heritage Museum. South Shore Country Club Board Members Murnie Leary and Frank Brown will moderate a conversation with the audience about the history of the Club. Refreshments will follow in the Museum ballroom. Tickets go on sale the first week in September.
Sunday, September 25th at 3PM – The Society’s 2022-2023 Lecture Series Native Homelands/Settler Colonialism launches at the Hingham Heritage Museum and continues through April 2023. World renowned experts in Native American History and Culture will lead the six-part series offered in person and via Zoom. Please watch for the series brochure in the mail. Series subscriptions go on sale the first week in September.
2022 marks the Society’s 100 years of stewardship of the 1686 Old Ordinary Museum at 21 Lincoln St. Two special events mark this anniversary;
Saturday night, October 1, 2022 Evening at Old Ordinary - For the first time in memory, 50 lucky guests will be able to drink and dine inside the Old Ordinary. Beginning with cocktails and music in the Olmsted Garden, guests will enjoy a four course, wine paired gourmet meal created by Kate’s Table while the historic Tap Room will be open for cocktails throughout the evening. Tickets go on sale the week of September 12th. Five of the six tables at this event are available for sponsorship and seat eight guests. Saturday night, October 15, 2022 - Our popular Tavern Night fundraiser returns to the tent and fire pit outside the Old Ordinary. Guests will enjoy beer, craft cocktails, light bites and live music and have a chance to bid on once in a life-time experiences like a private dinner at The Old Ordinary, your own Holiday Party at the Heritage Museum and have a chance to raise your paddle to support the work of the Society. Tickets go on sale in September on our website. Tavern Night has sold out each year it has been offered, please email membership@hinghamhistorical.org for sponsorship details.
Haunted Hingham returns the week of October 24th in partnership with The Company Theater and the Hingham Cemetery Corporation our popular Candlelight Tours of Old Ordinary return the first two weekends in November. Grab your friends and enjoy fun twists on the history of Hingham Square. Tickets for both these programs go on sale in late September.
Our Historic House Tour will be back next year on Sunday, October 1, 2023.
