The library will present two Evening with the Author events in May:
Bob Ryan presents "In Scoring Position," Wednesday, May 11, 7 p.m., Whiton Room.
Ryan, a former sports writer for The Boston Globe and a four-time winner of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association National Sportswriter of the Year Award, has scored every baseball game he's attended since 1977.
For Ryan, this is a deeply personal tradition still going strong at more than 1,400 games. The grids and scrawled symbols of his tattered scorebooks tell the stories of milestones, rivalries, and rare historic achievements.
"In Scoring Position" captures the incomparable spirit of baseball as Ryan, alongside baseball historian and statistician Bill Chuck, has scoured his archives for the most singular events — a switch-hitter being hit by a pitch from both sides of the plate in the same game; a player batting for the cycle off four different pitchers; and even back-to-back pinch-hit home runs with two outs in the ninth inning. This is a fascinating romp through baseball history, exuding a pure zeal for this sport. Ryan retired in 2012 after 44 years on the job.
This event will be held in person at the library and is presented in collaboration with Buttonwood Books. Registration is available online.
Charles Wheelan presents "Write For Your Life," Thursday, May 12, 7 p.m. on Zoom.
Wheelan answers questions such as, Would you create a winning pitch for your latest investment idea? Or persuasively argue for a major policy change? Or successfully ask your boss for a raise? The answer to accomplishing these goals is clear and effective communication, whether in writing or through a presentation, according to Wheelan.
In "Write For Your Life: A Guide to Clear and Purposeful Writing (and Presentations)," Wheelan takes readers through the steps required to arrive at a coherent first draft, then explains the best ways to fine-tune it.
Wheelan has spent decades mastering effective communication in his work as a writer, professor, journalist, speechwriter, political candidate, and public speaker.
He illustrates his points with entertaining personal examples, as well as anecdotes from the worlds of politics, culture, and sports.
Register online for this Zoom event. The email link will be emailed to participants shortly before the program.
