Hingham Public library is offering four Zoom programs in late February -- Conversion Equipment Showcase, Internet Safety Basics, Great Books You May Have Missed! 2021, and Native Americans of New England: History, Colonial Legacies and Survival.
Register online at www.hinghamlibrary.org for any or all of these offerings. The links will be emailed to those planning to join the programs shortly before they begin.
Conversion Equipment Showcase --Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2 p.m. Participants will learn about the conversion equipment that's available for use in the library and also to check out. From 8mm film, vinyl records, VHS, and more, there's a variety of devices to bring your memories into the digital age. The showcase will cover tips on ways to store digitized media and to start thinking about what methods and formats would work best for different individuals.
Internet Safety Basics -- Wednesday, Feb. 23, 5 p.m. Kelsey Keefe will share the basics of Internet safety, taking a look at worst-case scenarios, how to resolve issues when an individual's private information has been compromised, and best practices to avoid trouble in the first place.
Great Books You May Have Missed! 2021 -- Saturday, Feb. 26, 11 a.m. Peter Thornell, Collection Development Librarian, will present numerous titles from several different genres of both fiction and non-fiction. Those attending are also welcome to share their own list of “must read” titles.
This program provides an opportunity for participants to find something new and interesting to read -- even for those with long "recommended books" lists or who tend to read the same authors and styles over and over again.
Native Americans of New England: History, Colonial Legacies and Survival -- Monday, Feb. 28, 7 p.m. Christoph Strobel, Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and the author/co-author of three books about Native Americans -- will explore their history in New England.
While not turning a blind eye to the impact that colonization, dispossession, and racism had on the story of Indigenous peoples in the region, Strobel and program participants will explore the subjects of Native American resistance, adaptation, and survival under often harsh and unfavorable circumstances as well as examine some of the colonial legacies that still shape the views and perceptions/misperceptions about Indigenous peoples to this day.
