Evening With the Author: "Nazis of Copley Square: The Forgotten Story of the Christian Front" Thursday, Feb. 3, 7 p.m. -- Author Charles R. Gallagher, an associate professor of history at Boston College, will tell the story that took place on Jan. 13, 1940, when FBI agents burst into the homes and offices of 17 members of the Christian Front, seizing guns, ammunition, and homemade bombs, believing the group was planning to revolt and install a “temporary dictatorship” in order to stamp out Jewish and Communist influence in the United States.
The Front imagined themselves as crusaders fighting for the spiritual purification of the nation, and they traced their origins to global Catholic movements of the early 20th century, according to Gallagher. The Front’s anti-Semitism was inspired by sermons and lay leaders openly espousing fascist and Nazi beliefs. Gallagher chronicles the evolution of the Front, the transatlantic intelligence operations that subverted it, and the mainstream leaders who shielded the Front’s activities from scrutiny.
His book, "Vatican Secret Diplomacy," won the John Gilmary Shea Prize from the American Catholic Historical Association.
"Pause to Take a Breath, Finding Mindful Moments," Monday, Feb. 7, 6 p.m. --This 30-minute workshop, led by Paula McCree, includes breathwork, gentle upper body stretches, and a guided meditation -- all done from a comfortable seat either in a chair or on the floor. No prior experience is necessary. Tips will also be offered on how to use these practices to find mindful moments throughout the day.
"The Best of Beantown and Beyond: Wicked Awesome Boston Movies with Frank Mandosa," Tuesday, Feb. 8, 7 p.m. -- With so many movies set in New York City and Los Angeles, it's time to give Boston its time in the spotlight.
Mandosa, a high school English and film studies teacher with a passion for all things cinema, will offer a behind-the-scenes look at comedies, dramas, and crime thrillers that are set in the Boston area. He is also co-host of “Reel Life," a Stoughton-based cable TV program offering commentary and analysis on Hollywood cinema.
