A 20 year old Hingham man faces numerous firearms related charges after Detectives and a SWAT Team executed a search warrant at his home Wednesday morning.
Hingham Detectives began an investigation after receiving a tip of a resident who was seen online loading and unloading a semi-automatic pistol and an AR-15 style rifle which he purchased illegally. The tip also stated he had a ballistic plate carrier (used in vests worn by police and military for protection from rifle rounds) and made references several times to killing police and federal agents.
Detectives sought and were issued a nighttime search warrant for the residence. The warrant was served at 5:40am on June 24, 2020. Detectives from Cohasset, Hanover, Hull and Norwell Police assisted in the search warrant execution. Due to the types of loaded weapons, the plate carrier and threats to kill law enforcement, the Metro-LEC SWAT team assisted in the execution. The SWAT team called for each member of the house to come outside. All the residents walked outside to the SWAT team without incident.
The home was searched and items were found in the bedroom belonging to the 20 year old resident. Items included a loaded semi-automatic handgun, a loaded AR-15 style rifle, numerous loaded and unloaded handgun 21 round and 20 round rifle magazines, a revolver, ballistic vest carrier with two plates, ballistic helmet, several portable radios, additional gun and rifle parts, a tourniquet, packages of Quick Clot (commonly used to treat gunshot wounds), zip tie handcuffs and a double-edged knife.
Arrested was Julian J. Gilmartin, age 20, of 6 West Street, Hingham, MA. He was charged with 26 charges: Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm (2 counts), Possession of Dangerous Weapon, Leaving a Firearm Unattended (3 counts), Improper Storage of a Large Capacity Firearm, Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card, Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device (18 counts). He was not charged with making specific threats against law enforcement officers. It appears that some of the items found had been shipped to his home in pieces from out of state.
No other residents of the house were charged. Mr. Gilmartin was arraigned via telephone conference from the Hingham Police Department on June 24 and was ordered held without bail pending a Dangerous Hearing on June 29, 2020.
