Those of you who were around this afternoon probably wondered what the fire engine was doing down by the entrance. You may have also noticed the Hingham animal control officer’s car as well. Thankfully, no residents were in need of fire support, but one of our local “children” needed help.
In the early afternoon Pat from Arborscape was mowing below Unit 1 and saw something white in the grass. It turned out to be a baby hawk that had fallen out of a nest high up in a nearby pine. Pat called animal control who responded and determined the fledgling was not injured, just misplaced. Below is the little fellow carefully wrapped in a cloth being held by one of the firemen. The mom was flying around, unhappy with all the goings on.
It was decided to bring the little fellow home. So first he was moved to a rescue bag which fireman Bailey clipped to his coat.
Then in true fire rescue manner the fireman climbed up the tree to the nest.
When he reached the nest, he discovered that there were 2 more siblings waiting for their brother!
Once reunited everyone was simply waiting for mom’s return.
For the bird watchers in the neighborhood, it was a Cooper’s Hawk family.
Many thanks to Hingham animal control and Hingham Fire.
