Five Hingham High School teams gear up for playoff games this week.  Four out of the five are at home.  It will be a busy week on the turf.

FIELD HOCKEY

Senior captain Haylen Wilson, who leads her team in goals, looks to help Hingham back to the Final Four this year.

Last season, the Harborwomen had one of their most successful seasons making it to the Final Four before losing to top seed and D2 champion Reading team.  The girls picked up where they left off last year and racked up a 15-2-1 season.  Their only two losses coming at the hands of one of the best teams in the state, Sandwich.  The Harborwomen started the 2024 playoff run last week with a 3-1 win over Mansfield.  As the 6th seed this year, they will have another home game on Wednesday at 4pm vs 11th seed Malden Catholic.  A win on Wednesday would set up a potential in-town game vs NDA.

“We ended the regular season with a fantastic 6-2 win against a strong King Philip team, which gave us confidence heading into the tournament,” says coach Susan Petrie. “We are really working together well as a team- from the forwards to the mids to the defense. I think many teams rely on one or two stars to lead their team, and that’s what’s great about this team. They really all complement each other, and our ability to play both sides of the field has been a real strength for us that we hope to continue through the postseason.”

BOYS SOCCER

Senior captain Jacob Riker has recorded 13 shutouts this season anchoring a stellar team defense.

The Harbormen are looking to build on their successful regular season when their post season starts at home on Wednesday vs Nashoba Regional at 6pm.  The boys lost 1-0 to Oliver Ames last season in the quaterfinals just missing out on the Final Four.  First year head coach Dave Leahy is expecting his 4th-seeded team to build off the momentum over the last few weeks.

“We go into the playoffs winning 6 and tying 1 in our last 7 games and 6 shutouts in that time. We are ready to show our great defense and much improved offense starting Wednesday night.”

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Senior Kaitlyn Truong has been Hingham’s best offensive weapon this season as dominant outside player.

The girls started their post season last week and recorded the biggest upset in the 2024  D2 bracket with a 3-2 win over 11th-seeded Whitman-Hanson.  The Harborwomen lost twice during the regular season to the Panthers only winning one set in two matches (3-0, 3-1).

“Friday was an incredible team performance from everyone.” coach Jordan Lay says. “We had to dig deep and I was very proud of the way we kept our calm. I do believe that’s a big confidence boost moving ahead. But also, our job isn’t done. We have embraced the Zero and Forever mentality all season long. It’s imperative we remind ourselves of our foundation and what has gotten us here.”

The 22nd-seeded Harborwomen travel to the 6th-seeded Canton team on Wednesday night at 7pm for a chance at a spot in the quarterfinals.

GIRLS SOCCER

Taylor Bello leads a group of very talented sophomores making a huge impact on this year’s team.

There are a few seniors on this team who were part of the 2022 State Championship team.  Almost everyone, including first year coach April Tremante, hasn’t experienced a successful playoff run and look to chart their own success this year.  The Harborwomen finished the season 10-4-3.  A few growing pains along the way, which can be expected, but there have also been stretches of eyebrow raising play.  The girls are an 11th seed and will host 22nd-seed East Longmeadow on Thursday night at 5pm.

FOOTBALL

Sophomore JT Reale has emerged as one of the top receivers in the league giving Hingham their best downfield threat since Cole Finney (Hingham ’20, Duke ’24).

Closing out the week (as of now) under the lights on Friday night is Hingham football.  The Harbormen finished the regular season with a 5-3 record.  While they have been on both sides of some lopsided scores, they’ve consistently bounced back after loses.  Their play has earned them a home playoff game vs Walpole, which might have been a motivating factor, especially in the Silver Lake game, since they’ve only had three home games this season.  Walpole comes in as the 10th seed with a 5-3 record as well.  Should make for a great game.
