Once again the Town of Hingham will honor National Veterans Suicide Awareness & Remembrance Day with a ceremonial raising of the Suicide Awareness & Remembrance (SAR) Flag at Hingham High School in memory of Hingham’s SGT Matthew P. Partyka, USMC, who died on July 3, 2022.

The flag raising takes place in September, National Suicide Awareness Month. The primary mission of SAR is to break the stigma of mental health, suicide, and seeking treatment among the nation’s active-duty soldiers and veterans to prevent suicide. The SAR is also working with Congress to have September 22nd recognized nationally as “Veterans Suicide Awareness and Remembrance Day annually.

According to the Defense Health Agency, in the first study of its kind, suicide was the leading cause of death among active-duty soldiers between 2014 and 2019.
