The South Shore Out of the Darkness Community Walk to Prevent Suicide, held in the rain on Saturday, September 21 at Bare Cove Park, raised almost $89,000.
“The Town of Hingham and the entire planning committee for the walk would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the community for the overwhelming support shown during this year’s Suicide Prevention Walk,” said Elizabeth Miller, Social Worker in the Hingham Health Department, that hosted the walk in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Despite the raw weather, a turnout of over 560 participants came together with one shared purpose: to raise awareness, offer support, and take a stand against suicide in their community, and raised $88,561.
The funds raised will go to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to continue the mission of providing resources and support to those affected by mental health struggles, as well as educate the public about suicide prevention.
“This year’s walk was not just about raising funds but about showing solidarity, starting conversations, and creating hope for those who need it most. The community’s involvement sends a powerful message that no one is ever alone. If you or someone you know is struggling, please remember that help is available. Reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by calling or texting 988,” said Susan Sarni, MPH, Executive Health Officer for the Hingham Health Department.
