HMLP Schedules Nov. 18 Community Meeting to Seek Public Input on Hingham Electrical Infrastructure Reliability Project

November 11, 2021 Submitted by the Hingham Municipal Lighting Plant

The Hingham Municipal Lighting Plant (HMLP)today announced the second in a series of planned Community Meetings that will offer residents a briefing – and welcome their input – on the planned Hingham Electrical infrastructure Reliability Project. The second Community Meeting will be held on Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. via Zoom.

The proposed Hingham Electrical Infrastructure Reliability Project would result in a new, backup 115-kilovolt transmission line that will ensure the reliability of electric service to Hingham homes and businesses in the event of a disruption to the single transmission feed that currently serves the Town. The project also would add an additional, enclosed substation at HMLP’s existing substation near the Hingham Transfer Station on Hobart Road.

During the November meeting, HMLP will present a Powerpoint presentation that outlines the need for the project as well as other details. The HMLP team also will be available to answer questions from the public about the project.

The Community Meetings are part of HMLP’s overall plan to submit Warrant Articles for the 2022 Hingham Town Meeting. The Warrant Articles will ask for approval to borrow funds to construct the project and for the right to use the Town’s transfer station site for the substation. The overall project cost is estimated to range between $55 million and $60 million, depending on variables to be narrowed later.

“We had what we thought was a good turnout for the first community meeting in October. We had a good discussion and we felt like those who participated came away with a better understanding of the project,” HMLP General Manager Tom Morahan said. “For anyone who couldn’t make the first meeting – or who came up with another question – we welcome feedback and public input.”
