Kris Kringle
Kris Kringle is my favorite Johnson Family holiday tradition. Every Thanksgiving evening, the five of us pick a name from a hat to determine who our secret Kris Kringle for Christmas will be. We make a gift (cannot be store bought) for our Kris Kringle and we exchange these gifts, one at a time, on Christmas Eve wearing our new holiday jammies that our Elf, Fred, typically leaves while we are at Christmas Eve Mass. We started this tradition when our children were five, six and seven years old. The amount of creativity, thought and love that goes into each gift brings a few tears and many laughs as we present to one another.

Cooking the holiday sides
My favorite holiday tradition is cooking the sides for Thanksgiving. This is a special recipe that my entire extended family looks forward to - even those who don't usually enjoy sweet potatoes! Fun fact about this recipe: years ago, when I first came across the instructions, I jumped to the wrong second paragraph (for candied yams), mixing two recipes (!) but it came out so well that I kept the same mistake going!

Spending time at home
The holidays for us are all about being home, decorating and cooking. I’m not great with exterior lights, but I do love making holiday containers with greens and boxwood and setting a fancy tablescape for Christmas brunch. We cook a big meal for Christmas Day, so Christmas Eve we have a fun family dinner at Dalat in Hull. It’s always really busy and festive there!

Tinkertown and football
My favorite Duxbury holiday tradition is seeing the luminaries in Tinkertown on Christmas Eve, and the Duxbury vs. Marshfield football game on Thanksgiving, of course.

A time of reflection
What I like most about the holidays is the opportunity to slow down, spend time with family and friends and reflect upon the year. We typically take a family ski trip over the Christmas holiday, and the delicious oatmeal cookies from the cookbook always help to get us in the holiday spirit.

A double celebration
In our home we celebrate Hanukkah and Christmas, and we decorate for both! It's an eclectic mix, mismatched and colorful, but it's certainly festive! Our holiday style is completely casual and reflects our family traditions. My advice for holiday decorating? Tell your story - and just have fun!

A day dedicated to cookies
My favorite holiday tradition is Cookie Day! Each year we get together and bake cookies for the upcoming holidays. We make plenty so that each family will have enough for snacks and gift boxes. It’s one of my favorite days and my best holiday memories.
