Have you reached the end of Netflix? Are you searching for a new book title to dive into? Want to cook something new, or need some take-out inspiration?
If you are like us, you might be in need of some inspiration these days. So, we asked a few people around town to help us out by sharing what they've been watching, what they've been reading, and what they've been cooking/eating lately.
We hope you enjoy their responses as much as we did!
Karen Johnson, Board of Selectmen Chair
What are you watching?
I am watching ALOT of CNN and then for fun “Schitts Creek” on Netflix (I was a late adopter!); Little Fires Everywhere on Hulu (quite intense and I read the book!) and I will confess that I am a fan of political dramas (the ones on TV, not real life) and even though my family makes fun of me, one of my favorites on Netflix is “Occupied” which is in Norwegian with English subtitles. Yes, you heard that correctly. It is SO good. I round out my day with some Channel 9 re-runs and think wistfully of meetings at town hall!
What are you reading?
I am reading Erik Larson's new book, “The Splendid and the Vile” which is about World War II and specifically Churchill and Britain in 1940-41 before the US joined the fight. I like Erik Larson's writing. I really enjoyed “Devil in the White City” which was a book he wrote about the Chicago World's Fair. Although, now that I am typing this I am feeling like perhaps a lighter title or two might be a nice change of pace!
What are you cooking?
Definitely cooking! Although meal prep can be a challenge with a quarantine pantry! I feel fortunate to have market options in Hingham where people are taking care to shop carefully. One thing I have tried that I have not done for a long time is baking. I am a bad baker for many reasons. One is that I am often distracted during the ingredient process trying to multi-task maybe an email or two during my cookie prep and then comes the question...did I add the baking powder already? So that is one issue. The second issue is that I do not like to follow recipes, but free-lancing and baking do not work. The third and final issue is that in my usual meal-prep when all else fails I add a little more salt and garlic and maybe some butter -- not a good option for baking. BUT, I did find a recipe for oatmeal chocolate chip cookies that I completed without error and they were pretty good if I do say so myself. I felt that the oatmeal made the cookie a healthy snack!

What are you watching?
When I am not working my shifts at the Hingham Poilice Department, I’m home quarantining like we all should be and I have enjoyed some of my favorite old classic movies, but I've really enjoyed “Ozark” (Netflix).
What are you reading?
I'm actually surprised I'm reading more recipe books then I am regular books!
What are you cooking?
See my last response, I'm using this time to cook and bake a lot more at home, so I can watch what I'm eating and not adding on the lovely “Quarantine 15.” Therefore, I haven't done much take out yet, but when I do I can't wait to hit all the yummy spots in Hingham!
A lot of my evenings you will find me swinging in my chair on my porch, listening to my record player, with a fire going, watching the sun go down!
I hope your all staying home, safe with your families, wearing your masks and washing your hands! One favor Hingham, can we all make an agreement and not adopt or buy any Tigers!?!
We are all in this together and we will get through it, stay strong Hingham!
