It’s time to sign up for the Good Friday Walk; Hingham Congregational celebrating Mission Sunday March 17

March 6, 2024 By Carol Britton Meyer

Sharing, Inc. is hosting the 53rd Good Friday Walk on March 29 from noon to 3 p.m., starting and ending at Hingham Congregational Church, 366 Main St.

The 3-mile loop — which continues south on Main Street to South Shore Baptist Church at Free Street and then north on Main Street back to HCC — can be walked once or multiple times.  Check-in for walkers, who are asked to secure sponsors totaling at least $20, will take place at the church at 11:30 a.m.

Former Hingham resident and HCC member Kay Doherty first walked the loop with a few friends and family members in 1972 and went on to found the non-profit Sharing, Inc., three years later.

The idea was sparked by an article in the Boston Globe that drew attention to the impoverished conditions of a rural area in Mississippi. “If God is anything, God is inclusive,” Doherty said at that time.

Since its founding, the organization has raised more than $4.5 million for some of the poorest areas of the country.

This year, Sharing, Inc. is supporting The Federation of Southern Cooperatives (https://www.federation.coop/about-us), which serves a multi-state membership of black farmers, landowners, cooperatives, or other low-income rural people in the South with coop development, land retention, and advocacy.

Addressing injustice and racism
“This is a meaningful way to observe Good Friday — a time for personal contemplation or for sharing time with friends or family while at the same time helping to address the issues of injustice and racism in the world,” walk organizer and HCC junior choir director Ed Bartholomew told the Hingham Anchor.

To sign up, sponsor a walker, or make a donation online, go to https://hccucc.com/good-friday-walk-for-sharing/. All are welcome to participate — as a walker, sponsor, or a volunteer to help with the walk.

Checks made out to Sharing, Inc. may be sent to the church office at 366 Main St., Hingham, Mass. 02043.

Prior to the March 29 walk, HCC will celebrate Mission Sunday on March 17 by recognizing agencies that receive the much-needed support of time, talent, and funding from the congregation.

Herb Newell, Executive Director of Friends of the Homeless of the South Shore, will speak at the 10 a.m.  worship service.

Representatives from Asaprosar, Wellspring Multi-Service Centers, South Shore Habitat for Humanity, Rise Above, Father Bill’s and Mainspring, Interfaith Social Services, DOVE, Pine Street Inn, and the United States Foundation for Haiti will share information about their organizations following the worship service during coffee hour in Hale Hall.

Through its active outreach ministry, HCC contributes to more than 25 local, regional, national, and global organizations and provides a variety of resources to the homeless; those suffering from domestic abuse and experiencing food insecurity; individuals with physical, emotional, and intellectual disabilities; theological learning; international organizations helping children, women, and refugees; and disaster relief.

Child care will be available during the worship service. All are welcome to attend.
