Janine Suchecki named Hingham 2023 Veteran of the Year

November 16, 2023 By Carol Britton Meyer

Congratulations to Janine Suchecki, who was recently named the Hingham Hank Maude “Service Above Self” Veteran of the Year for 2023. She is a member of the Hingham American Legion Post 120.

“Janine served her country in the United States Navy. During her service, Janine distinguished herself by being the first woman in the Navy to complete passive sonar training, which relates to identifying foreign submarines that pose a security threat to the United States,” Director of Veterans’ Services Keith Jermyn said.

“Janine’s municipal service is nothing short of exemplary, including six years as chair of the Hingham Cultural Council and five years as the vice chair and public affairs officer on the Veterans Council.”

“It was truly an overwhelming honor,” Suchecki told the Hingham Anchor.

Suchecki has single-handedly changed the Veterans Services outreach efforts through her social media skills, with a specific focus on helping veterans in need in the Hingham community and increasing awareness of the various programs available to veterans and their survivors.

“Many veterans have credited her work with making a substantial difference in their lives,” Jermyn said.

Most recently, Governor Maura Healey recognized Suchecki’s efforts when she presented her with a Gubernatorial Citation as a finalist for the prestigious Deborah Sampson Award recognizing women veteran leaders in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Suchecki, who has two children, is a lifelong resident of Hingham and currently serves as chair and housing commissioner for the Hingham Housing Authority. She owns The Hungry Shark, LLC, a business marketing strategies consultancy.

Suchecki was recently appointed to the Plymouth County Commission on the Status of Women and is the first Hingham resident and the first woman veteran to serve on the commission in Plymouth County.

“I’m pretty proud of this, as I also plan to focus on the wellness of women first responders and veterans during my commission,” Suchecki said.

“Janine is a tireless advocate for veterans and is a role model for female veterans on the South Shore,” Jermyn said.
