John Francis Gerard MacGillivray of Hingham passed away at home, surrounded by his loving family on Monday, June 24, 2024. He was 82.
He was born on October 15th, 1941in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada to Margaret (Campbell) and Charles MacGillivray. His family moved from Canada when he was a young boy and he spent the remainder of his childhood in Braintree, MA. He graduated from Braintree High School where he played hockey for the school’s first hockey team and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in accounting at Bentley University, Class of 1975. After college he pursued a career in accounting and had the opportunity to work in many different industries, most recently, the architectural industry. John also played hockey in a men’s league and was a passionate player.
John’s life was centered around his family. He met his wife, Gloria (Lucchetti) at his brother’s wedding. She was the maid of honor, and he was the best man. They were inseparable for 54 years and would go on to have two children, and five grandchildren. John took up golf in his retirement and enjoyed playing with his friends and family. Golf was a hobby which he wished he had picked up earlier in life, but he was happy to play anywhere. He was also a loyal Boston Bruins fan. Most of all, John adored spending time with his grandchildren, and would prefer that to a day on the course or to the best seats at a Bruins game, any day. He was always a husband, father and grandfather first.
John could be best described as sincere, gentle and honest. His loving nature and sense of humor made him fast friends. There wasn’t a single person who met John who didn’t like him. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Beloved husband of 54 years to Gloria Rose MacGillivray (Lucchetti) of Hingham. Devoted father to Lisa Bial and her husband Scott of Wenham, and Nancy MacGillivray of Hamilton. Loving brother to James MacGillivray of VT, Joanne Donovan of NJ, Judy Bellanger of Norwell, Louise MacGillivray of Braintree, Leone MacGillivray of Braintree, Rose Cronin of Marblehead and Michael MacGillivray of FL. Cherished grandfather to Jack, Julia, Samuel, Elena and Pia. Predeceased by his parents: Margaret (Campbell) and Charles MacGillivray and his siblings: Dennis MacGillivray, Joseph MacGillivray, Helen MacGillivray and Leonard MacGillivray.
