On Sunday, December 8 at 5:00 pm, the Episcopal Parish of St. John the Evangelist in Hingham will offer its annual Advent Service of Lessons & Carols. This well-loved service has deep roots in the Anglican musical tradition and draws worshippers from throughout Hingham and the South Shore each December.

For many, Lessons & Carols is a deeply moving way to fully enter into the Advent season of anticipation and preparation. Through a series of Scripture readings emphasizing the loving purposes of God, interspersed with choir anthems and congregational hymns, this unique service draws us ever closer toward the arrival of Christmas. The service is not a Christmas liturgy, but one that points us toward the coming of the Prince of Peace.

This inspiring respite from the surrounding consumer culture, includes sacred music led by the St. John’s Choir under the direction of organist-choirmaster Elisabeth Gray.

Whether this is a long-standing family tradition or you have never before experienced Advent Lessons & Carols, we hope you will join us. The service will be followed by a Candlelight Reception in the parish hall featuring the popular wassail “Smoking Bishop.”

St. John’s is located at 172 Main Street (at the corner of Water Street) in Hingham. For more information contact the Parish Office at 781-749-1535 or log onto the church website at www.stjohns-hingham.org.
