1,600 runners, ages 5 to 85, lined up on a rainy and humid July 4th morning to participate in the 65th running of the annual road race.
Mike Durkin, 25, of Brighton and Alexandra Walsh, 18, of Southlake, Tx crossed the finish line first as top male and female runners.
Durkin, who grew up in Hingham and graduated Hingham High School in 2016, ran cross country and track for the Harbormen.
“It’s an honor to claim the victory for the town,” Durkin told the Anchor after the race. “It’s a perfect course, which is why it’s so popular. Slightly downhill through the center of one of the best-looking towns in the country.”
Walsh, who was in the area from Texas visiting friends, also commented on the course.
“The course was great and fast,” Walsh said. “Overall it was a classic road race. There was a good mix of up and down hills.”
Steve O’Driscoll, 24, of Norwell, and Neil Davis, 40, of Cohasset rounded out the top three for the men. Christina Campbell, 41, of Hingham and Erica Knighton, 38, of Providence, RI finished second and third for the women.
