Did you know that skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States each year? In fact, one in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer at some point in his or her lifetime.
Local expert Judy A. Dunal, MD, a Hingham resident and an internal medicine primary care provider at Brigham and Women’s Harbor Medical Associates shares,
“Summer is the time for outdoor activities, and it’s important to remember good skin care to prevent not only sun induced aging changes but also prevent skin cancers. To reduce skin damage, try to avoid sun exposure at peak hours 11 am - 3 pm. Always be sure to apply sunscreen to exposed areas not only during sunny days but also cloudy days as well, and consider using other forms of skin protection as sun protective clothing, hats and umbrellas for shade. Always have concerning or changing skin areas evaluated by your PCP or Dermatologist. “
The most common skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, followed by melanoma and other skin cancers. When identified early, almost all skin cancers can be cured with treatment.
