February 25, 2021
Mary A. Whelan (Curran) of Hingham, formerly of Bedford, NY passed away peacefully in Hingham residing close by her loving children and extended family on February 25, 2021 at the age of 85.
Born in New York City on November 10, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Mae (McGinty) Curran. Mary was a graduate of Cathedral High School and Fordham University. At the age of 17, Mary was chosen as a grand prize winner in the NYC Daily News High School Beauty Contest. This led to a successful career as a professional model in NYC. After raising her five children, she went on to have a successful career as a Realtor with Coldwell Banker in Bedford, NY. She was consistently a top producer and was named the #1 Sales Associate for Coldwell Banker for the Westchester/Putnam Region in 1988.
Mary was a beautiful woman with a “touch of class” who dressed impeccably and carried herself with style and grace. She was truly a beautiful woman both inside and out, known for her warm smile, and witty sense of humor.
Mary was a wonderful listener and always knew just when you needed a call of encouragement. She had many close friends that she would talk to for hours on the phone each day. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends on the beach talking, laughing and reading. She would always place her chair close to the waves and would be the last one to leave the beach. In the evenings she loved getting together with family and friends at one of her favorite restaurants. She also loved listening to Frank Sinatra music and dancing with her husband.
Mary was the beloved wife of the late George M. Whelan, who died in 2017. Together they shared many loving years of marriage. She was the devoted mother of Lizann Woods and her spouse Greg of Medfield, Tara Coveney and her spouse Tom of Hingham, Chris Whelan and his spouse Nancy of Cohasset, Melissa West and her spouse George of Bedford, NY, and the late Kathy Whelan, formerly of CT. She was the loving sister of Peter Curran and his spouse Claudine of Belgium, the late Noreen Ministri and the late Jack Curran and his surviving spouse Glenna of TX. She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild whom she loved very much.

Mary was such a beautiful person inside and out. She was such a breath of fresh air. She always had on the best outfits, and I told her I would bring her shopping with me so she could pick out my outfits. She is already missed here at Hingham by all of the staff and residents. We are so grateful that she spent her last few months here with us <3
