North Street Crosswalk – The Select Board Seeks Your Input

August 7, 2024 Submitted by the Town of Hingham

During their July 30 meeting, the Hingham Select Board considered a concept for locating a crosswalk on North Street, at the Hingham Post Office. The concept includes a striped crosswalk connecting two posts with signage and Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacons (RRFBs). Signs and beacons will be deployed in a way that will preserve existing street lighting.

The Select Board welcomes your input. Please share input or questions by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 21. Your feedback will be discussed during the Select Board’s Tuesday, August 27 meeting.

  1. Something needs to be done at this crosswalk. I have almost been hit 3 times and all 3 times I was in the crosswalk and the cars in both direction had not thoughts of stop or even slowing down for that matter.

  2. I was parked in the handicapped space in front of Hennessey’s when a car driving through at high speed struck my side and tore the mirrors off my car. North St has 5 access roads entering it and people use the Square as a transit point to other destinations. The Square should be a destination point for shopping, walking or church.I suggest we restrict more roadways to one way and use any newly created space for increased parking. A good example would be the Town of Concord which slows traffic dramatically through the center while dealing with tourist travel on Battle road headed to the National park.

  3. I believe state has set backs from parking to close to crosswalks (20 feet)
    Move post office to shipyard.
Reduce speed limit in square proper to 15 mph.
Set up cameras and ticket speeders and people that don’t stop at stop signs. It all can be done automatically. Similar to what is used at toll booths. Photo plate and mail you a ticket.
