George Marvin Hawkins, 82, of Sandwich and Bourne, MA and formerly of Meredith, NH and Hingham, MA passed away peacefully on December 5, 2024 suffering from the effects of several medical issues. He was the son of Richard P. and Ernestine Hills Hawkins as well as the step son of Mary Talbot Hawkins, all deceased. He is survived by his brother, Richard P. Hawkins, Jr of Pocasset, MA formerly of Hingham, MA and sister Ernestine Hills Hawkins Shineman, of Bluffton, SC and formerly of Annapolis MD and Hingham, MA as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
George grew up in Hingham, MA attending Derby Academy, Governor Dummer Academy also attending Tufts University, and graduated from Belknap College in the Meredith, NH area. While in Meredith he began his decades long business as a certified professional photographer and opened a framing shop until he fell and was never able to recover sufficiently to return to his shop. Over the years he was a member of many photography associations often serving on their boards and also serving as their president. He was one of the first to take advantage of digital photography as part of his business, staying in the forefront of the latest technology. He was also a member of the Massachusetts Charitable Fire society with other members of his family. He also was an avid sailor and enjoyed canoeing as well as cruising in his family’s 32’ cutter.
As a veteran, he also served as a U.S Navy air traffic controller at the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station in the days when blimps were still stationed there and took pride in being able to climb to the very top rafters of the blimp hangers.
When the weather gets warmer, in the Spring or early Summer, there will be plans for a memorial service.
