A small playground in Powers Field, Centre Hingham, is a lovely idea, let’s make it work for everyone.
A small playground retaining the character and charm of the surroundings, and respectful to all who share this space, is entirely possible. In fact, it’s quite simple. A small traditional A-frame swing set, a seesaw, and a small climber that all meet regulations would be perfectly suitable and easy to install. This was the original intention of the neighborhood a few years ago, repair or replace the existing equipment in keeping with what was there. In order to share this beautiful grassy space, the scale of the playground has to be small, otherwise the ways in which people enjoy Powers Field will be compromised. There is a reason why the old playground was cherished for generations. It was sweet, old school, and uncomplicated. Everyone loved it. In addition the land is the last unprotected piece of land in Centre Hingham, coveted by many who pass by and through it everyday. We have to be careful what we do with it.
We have heard from Town Hall that they will build a playground that both sides can agree on. We can sit across the table from one another and come up with a compromise that makes everyone happy, especially the abutters who unanimously oppose the current plan, and whose daily lives will be impacted the most.
There is no reason why we can’t compromise, nicely, politely, and respectfully.

I remember playing on this playground when I was growing up in Hingham. The appeal of the playground was that it was simple, grassy, and conducive to imaginative play. It didn’t obstruct any views of the area and was so much fun to spend time there as a little girl. Anything bigger in scale or size bigger than what was there wouldn’t work. There’s no need for bigger equipment and I disagree with excavating.
