Opinion: Rediscovering Respect and Civility

Some of you may have read the statement last week on social media by the four candidates for Hingham School Committee. Here is an excerpt:

“Together, we, your four Hingham School Committee candidates, would like to deliver a united message to all Hingham residents. We stand together in our belief in unequivocal respect for one another and will not tolerate misguided, untruthful, and unfounded political dynamics. The last two years have put a concerning level of divisiveness among our residents on full display. Rather than allow that negative energy, we each, individually, want to focus on our respective campaign messages while simultaneously working together to ensure this campaign process is positive. We will not tolerate or allow any behavior that does not uphold the high standards of integrity that our town deserves. Once May 14th comes and goes, we will all still be united in our efforts to put the town’s best collective foot forward in the mission of educating our children.”

Bravo! True leaders model behavior for others to follow. Alyson Anderson, Matthew Cosman, Matthew LeBretton and Nes Correnti represent the values that most of us can and should follow. Thank you.

Most candidates running in National and State elections say they will “fight” for us. In Hingham, “fighting” is not what our elected leaders and residents are about. Here is what the four candidates say.

“All of us decided to run for School Committee because we want to be part of improving our schools and making them a better place for our children. Nothing more, nothing less.”

Each individual approaches that objective with unique life experiences. That diversity of experience makes Hingham a vibrant community and a wonderful place to raise and educate children.

The unified statement reminds me of another declaration:

“We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battle-field, and patriot grave, to every living heart and hearth-stone, all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.” – Abraham Lincoln, First Inaugural Address, 1861

The four candidates are volunteers willing to serve to make Hingham a better place for our children. The call to serve appeals to the “better angels of our nature”. Civility exists in each of us and is a cornerstone of our democracy. That’s a lesson happily rediscovered.

  1. As the saying goes: “All politics are local.” Kudos to our current crop of School Committee candidates for setting a tone for their campaigns that focuses on substance and respect for diversity of opinion. (And thank you, Glenn, for highlighting this joint effort and reminding us why it is so important.)

    • DIVERSITY IS ONLY GOOD WHEN IT IS MORAL …ALL OF US WANT OUR CHILDREN TO LEARN THE 3 R’S NOT PROPAGANDA, SEXUAL CONTENT, NOT SOMEONE ELSE’S VALUES BUT THEIR PARENTS VALUES AND THE JUDAEO CHRISTIAN VALUES THAT HAVE BUILT OUR COUNTRY NOT WHAT IS CURRENTLY DESTROYING OUR COUNTRY. OUR CHILDREN ARE PRECIOUS AND WE DO NOT WANT SEXUALITY AS A SUBJECT. THE FLAG WE WANT HUNG IS THE AMERICAN FLAG. THE ACCEPTANCE WHO ALL BELIEVE IN COUNTRY, GOD, AND A COUNTRY WHO’S CHILDREN RESPECT ALL AS THEY ARE, BUT NOT SUPPORT A CHANGE TO TEAR DOWN WHAT THEY ARE BEING TAUGHT AT HOME. . SOMEONES TRUTHS CAN NOT BE INJECTED INTO YOUNG DEVELOPING TRUTHS IN THE SCHOOLS . PARENTS RIGHTS CANNOT BE TRAMPLED.ON. WE ALL KNOW CHILDREN ARE DIFFERENT, EVEN IN OUR OWN FAMILIES, NO TWO CHILDREN ARE ALIKE BUT PRESERVING THESE DIFFERENCES DOES NOT MEAN WE HAVE HAVE TO TRAMPLE AND REVERSE EVERYONE TO REFLECT A SAMENESS. TEACHERS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN OUR LEADERS FOR THE SUCCESS FOR OUR CHILDREN’S ACADEMIC FUTURE. THE KEY WORD HERE ACADEMIC.PLEASE RESPECT PARENTS AND THEIR DESIRE TO SET A PATH FOR THEIR CHILDREN’S LIVES AND NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH ANY LITERATURE, OR OR TEACHINGS THAT GO AGAINST THE AMERICAN JUDAEO CHRISTIAN IDEAL. WE ARE WATCHING, YES IN THESE TIMES THE PARENTS ARE WATCHING, YES THERE ARE BOUNDARIES AND STEPPING OVER THEM IN A CLASSROOM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED BY PARENTS. WE ARE PRAYING HINGHAM SCHOOLS WILL SUPPORT IDEALS WE AS PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS HAVE GROWN UP WITH.
