"Out and About" is a new column by Hingham's Katherine Bennett which will focus on the small businesses and local treasures that make up the landscape and bustling economy of our town.
Are you stumped about what to give the person who has “everything” for Christmas? Consider original art! Whether you seek to enhance an existing collection or resurrect a sentimental piece of child’s artwork that you have filed away, you can be confident in a gift that is timeless, thoughtful and unique.
Slightly off the beaten path, South Street Gallery is located midway between the Sherwin Williams shopping plaza and the South Shore Country Club. In addition to offering curated shows of New England artists, competitively priced framing services are provided by Kevin Wool.
To celebrate their twentieth anniversary in 2020, the gallery is seeking to cultivate a new generation of fine art enthusiasts here in Hingham. Owner Jack Hobbs explains, “An unprecedented amount of exceptional art is being created in this region, and this provides an opportunity to build a collection from artists who are gaining national visibility.”
Understanding that buying art can feel intimidating to the novice collector, Hobbs is seeking to make the process more accessible by hosting a small painting show that is timed to allow for holiday gift giving. To that end, the gallery is hosting the Small Treasures show that is running through January 3 and all paintings are priced at or below $400.
Perhaps best known for plein air landscapes in oil, South Street Gallery is committed to offering customers access to artists who take a representational approach. At the same time, Hobbs explains, “Lately we are seeing artists evolve in a direction where light and form are broken down into geometric shapes, and want to reflect that in our inventory.”
Hobbs and his wife have five children between them, and miss the day to day energy of raising a family now that the youngest two are in college. Recognizing that in today’s hectic world screen time can edge out creative pursuits, Hobbs wants to create a legacy that supports young artists. To that end, the gallery is offering a 20% discount on framing of children’s artwork that will run until December 31.
Whether you are looking to buy a masterpiece or a local spot to meet your framing needs, South Street Gallery is a Hingham treasure.
