A certificate of congratulations was recently presented by the Select Board in recognition of a "very special occasion" -- longtime Hingham resident Phyllis Chapman's 105th birthday.

The certificate, which wishes her "a joyous 105th birthday," also commends Chapman for being a member of Bentley College's first graduating night school class that included women during World War II.

State Representative Joan Meschino and State Senator Patrick O’Connor present Phyllis with a citation

A resident of Hingham for more than six decades and a travel enthusiast and cruise connoisseur, Chapman is a dedicated member of the Senior Center's fitness program, among other interests.

"We applaud your spirit and vitality and wish you many happy and healthy years to come," the certificate says. "Happy Birthday, Mrs. Chapman!"

For the past six years -- since she was 100 -- friends have planned birthday celebrations for their dear friend.

During the pandemic, they took the celebration to Station Street, where her hairdresser is located.  It's not unusual for 30 to 40 people to attend to wish Chapman a happy birthday.
This was the third year meeting at this location to help Chapman celebrate her special day -- on Thursday, Oct. 27.  The celebration began at 10:30 a.m., featuring signs celebrating her life and well-wishers bringing donations for the Hingham food pantry in her name.

Jean Silverio, one of Chapman's friends and a member of the Council on Aging, helped organize the event.

Congratulations and best wishes for a wonderful year ahead, Phyllis!

Phyllis was nominated for the Today show centenarians. They did send Phyllis’ picture on a Smucker’s jar.
