A 6:33 p.m. last night (July 1), a Hingham Police Department Twitter post explained that police activity in the Hingham Harbor area involved a "precautionary search" for an adult female swimmer who was seen walking from the beach near the boat ramp into the water and then swimming toward Button Island.

According to the report, witnesses did not see her come out of the water but noted that they had not had a constant view of the swimmer because they had "looked away."

The Hingham Harbormaster and the United States Coast Guard helicopter aided in the search by checking the area.

As the search continued, the Twitter post noted that the swimmer -- described as a white female in her 50s with blonde hair dressed in black mid-thigh swim shorts -- may have already left the area.

The police asked for the woman to confirm that she had come safely out of the water by calling the HPD through the Dispatch Center at Town Hall.

A later update reported that a phone call from the swimmer confirmed that she had been swimming and left the area when she was finished.

The HPD acknowledged that witnesses reported the incident "in good faith concern for her safety" and thanked all who participated in the search effort.
