Reverend Richard Mayberry

The Reverend Richard Mayberry died peacefully on October 14th at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, Massachusetts following a period of declining health.

Father Mayberry had served as Rector at Saint Francis Episcopal Church on Long Ridge Road in Stamford for 30 years. A native of the West Coast Richard attended seminary at the general seminary in New York City and served parishes at Saint Marks Episcopal Church in Mount Kisco, New York, as an assistant, and then after his retirement from ministry at Saint Francis he served parishes at Saint Paul’s Church Fairfield, Connecticut, and Saint Matthew’s Church in Wilton, Connecticut. He then retired to Provincetown, Massachusetts, and most recently had moved into the Linden Ponds Senior Living Residence in Hingham, Massachusetts.

While Rector of Saint Francis Church, he oversaw the design and construction of the church building, as well as leading the Capital Campaign to fund the project. Fr. Mayberry was the quintessential parish priest, loving and accompanying his parishioners on their life journeys. His ministry was hallmarked by compassionate pastoral care, his wonderful sense of humor and his gift for creating beauty in all that he did.

Richard was predeceased by his parents, the Reverend Ted and Elsie Mayberry, as well as his sister, Ruth Mayberry. In 1995 Richard lost the love of his life, Edward Gray and mourned his loss for the next 29 years.

He is survived by his cousin Pam Watts, as well as many cousins and relatives. Richard also had an extraordinary gift for friendship The many people who were privileged to be his friends, will cherish his memory and love.

A memorial service will be held at Saint Francis Episcopal Church on 2810 Long Ridge Rd., Stamford, CT 06903 on Saturday, October 26th at 1 PM. A reception will follow in the parish hall.
