Robert “Bob” Murphy, age 72, of Hingham, formerly of Scituate, passed away on July 6, 2023, in the company of his wife, close friend and his beloved cats. Born in Boston to the late Leonard E. and Mary C. (Clancy) Murphy, Bob grew up in Scituate with his sister, Maureen and brother Gregory, where he developed a love for the water at an early age and fondness for cars and motorcycles while attending Scituate High School, where he graduated in 1968.
Bob was the beloved husband of Sue Brown and the brother of Gregory Murphy of Brockton and Maureen Gitner Murphy of Framingham. He was the nephew of Mary Kathleen Murphy (Larson) and the late Edward F Murphy, Fredrick and Irene (Murphy) Allen. Bob also leaves behind his sisters-in-law, Carolanne Brown, Bonney Brown, Kelley Bollen, and Katherine Murphy, his cherished cats Bella, JB and Princess as well as cousins and many friends.
Bob received his bachelors degree from Boston State College in 1972, where he further fostered his love of boating and scuba diving and interest in politics and history. Bob was given the gift of love of travel by his parents and indulged in it with his wife as often as he could manage. Bob had the wonderful gift of finding humor and joy in every day and loved sharing it with his friends with his amazing gift of storytelling. Bob never waited for retirement to enjoy life, have new experiences or start another adventure with his wife, Sue. Since his retirement from the Massachusetts Department of Revenue, he loved the additional time to pursue his many and varied interests. Bob was a long-term member of the Holbrook Sportsmen’s Club, Holbrook, MA.
When Bob wasn’t traveling or planning another adventure, he enjoyed photography, reading, collecting vintage cameras and watches, fine wine, running one of his boats, riding one of his motorcycles or scooter, fishing, cooking hot dogs over an open fire on the beach, and spending time with his cats and friends.
Bob has requested no flowers or cards and instead has asked for memorial donations to Father Bill’s Mainspring in Quincy; Wellspring Multi-Service Center in Hull, or your local food pantry.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be announced. For additional information and online guest book please go to www.downingchapel.com
