Finnegan Straub, an eighth grade student at Saint Paul School is a national finalist in The Veterans of Foreign Wars annual Patriots Pen essay contest. Finnegan lives in Cohasset where he participates in scouting activities, club soccer and enjoys hiking. At Saint Paul School he excels in math, writing and science and hopes to pursue engineering or medicine in his future

Finnegan submitted an essay to Hingham’s VFW Post for the contest the theme of which was “What makes America Great”. After being graded the best, it was forwarded to the surrounding district’s posts where it was again judged the best. Finally, his essay was reviewed by the state’s VFW and once again won the honor of a first place judgement. He is one of 120,000 middle school students who participated in the national contest and is now one of 50 students under consideration of being the national winner.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars organization offers a total of $50,000 in prizes in this contest with the first place winner receiving $5,000.00. Hingham’s VFW Post has been sponsoring this program for 10 years with approximately 1,000 Hingham middle and high school students participating over that time. It has offered a great opportunity and experience for students of Hingham and has been enthusiastically supported by the Town’s educators and parents.

The members of Hingham’s VFW Post congratulate Finnegan and Saint Paul School for this recognition and wish him good luck when on March 2, 2020 the winner will be announced at the VFW Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C.

WELL DONE FINNEGAN!!!
