The annual Christmas in the Square Celebration Friday, Dec. 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. will feature live holiday music, a visit by Santa atop a fire truck and photos with the jolly fellow, an ice sculpture, giant-sized peppermint sticks, The Festival of Trees by the Hingham Women’s Club, and other fun activities that have become a Hingham holiday tradition for over 40 years.
This joyful and beloved holiday tradition brings people of all ages together to kick off and celebrate the holiday season. Families, parents, children, and grandparents come out on the first Friday in December while watching their children’s excitement as they see Santa arrive on the fire truck.
Another great attraction is the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life,” projected on the wall on the tunnel cap organized by The Saint Paul School. And don’t miss the magical snow show in the Square (cotton ball showers) over the train tunnel cap.
Be sure to stop by Santa’s mailbox (outside La Petite Maison) that sends Christmas wish lists to Santa straight to the North Pole. Santa’s been known to respond to the letters!
This year’s celebration will also feature the second Annual Luminaria Festival which will make for a festive backdrop for the enchanted night as we “Light up the Square.” There’s a requested donation of $20 for the purchase of luminaria — Christmas lanterns with votive candles in a small paper bag — which will line the streets starting at the Heritage Museum. The bags are personalized with the family name, greeting, or in-memory-of message. Each bag will be weighed down with a can of soup which will be donated to the Hingham Food Pantry! Luminarias may be purchased at discoverhingham. All proceeds go toward the Christmas in the Square celebration.
This cherished holiday tradition is organized and sponsored by the Hingham Downtown Association. Christmas in the Square wouldn’t be possible without the generous donations of Miracle on Main Street guests, Hingham Downtown Association members, generous donations from residents and, the proceeds from the luminarias. Also, a special thanks to our generous sponsors of Christmas in the Square, including: Linden Ponds, South Shore Bank, Hingham Institution for Savings, The Fruit Center, The Rotary Club, Talbots, and Curtis Management.
