Select Board Chair Joseph Fisher read the following statement recognizing and honoring fellow board member William Ramsey’s military service and recent retirement.
Last Thursday, April 3, many of us were privileged to watch or listen to the military retirement ceremony held in Alexandria, Virginia, for Bill Ramsey – a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Reserve.
We heard much about Bill’s 28 years of military service, including his active duty as an officer in the Judge Advocate Generals Corps attached to the US Army’s 82nd Airborne in Afghanistan.
During Bill’s retirement ceremony we heard from generals, colonels, and civilians who praised Bill for
- his leadership,
- his legal skills, and
- his kindness as a person.
But I wanted to learn more about Bill Ramsey, the guy who was receiving all these accolades. So after the ceremony I did a Google search and here is what I found on Facebook:
“William Ramsey is an experienced professional with a solid history of success in the United States Army. He has an extensive background in logistics. Strong ability to build and lead teams that meet and exceed designated goals and expectations. His job titles have included Operational Specialist, Operations Manager, Administrative Specialist, Data Entry Specialist, ·and Astrologer.
He is currently working as the Chief Operating Officer at ZLB Astrology, Tarot & Gifts located in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
Well, Bill is either working multiple jobs and has an alter ego, or this was the wrong Bill Ramsey.
So I searched again, and I learned about Mr. Bill Ramsey who is the Recruiting Operations Officer at The University of Scranton in Pennsylvania.
That was still the wrong Bill Ramsey.
So I searched one more time and this time I found our Bill Ramsey. The Bill Ramsey who has served on Hingham’s Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Recreation Commission, the July 4th Parade Committee, the Veterans Council, other committees and, of course, the Select Board.

I learned about the Honorable William Ramsey who joined the Social Security Administration as a U.S. Administrative Law Judge in 2011 and was appointed the Chief Judge of the Boston Hearing Office in 2012. I learned about Bill Ramsey as Executive Vice President of the Association of Administrative Law Judges, which represents more than 1,000 federal administrative law judges engaged in adjudication at the Social Security Administration.
I learned about our Bill Ramsey who worked as:
- an Assistant Chief Counsel for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security,
- an Assistant District Attorney in Plymouth County, and
- as a prosecutor for the U.S. Army Judge Advocate Generals Corps.
I learned about Bill Ramsey who
- served in both Iraq and Afghanistan and
- taught Constitutional and Military Law on the faculty of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
But most importantly, I learned about Bill’s philosophy on life and work. In 2020, Bill was quoted in the Hingham Anchor as offering the following advice:
“Always remember your ability is simply what you have been born with. Your drive to succeed, your work ethic, and integrity will determine what you do and how well you do it.”
Bill, on behalf of the Town, we honor your retirement from the military and we are honored to continue to work with you as a colleague and as a friend.
