Twenty people have already signed up for Volunteer Day at South Shore Country Club on Saturday, March 26, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. The golf course will be closed during those hours to accommodate the cleanup.
While that's a good start, more volunteers are needed to perform the many tasks at hand as part of a team effort.
Members of the Hingham High School golf team and other students are expected to lend a helping hand. "This should be a great event!" Friends of South Shore Country Club member Christine Smith told the Hingham Anchor. The Friends group is organizing the event.
Here's the schedule: Volunteers will be slotted into teams of six prior to the event. Participants will gather at the first tee, where coffee and donuts will be available to start the day off right!
Golf Supt. Jake Silva will explain the plan of action, and Country Club Executive Director Kevin Whalen will offer tips about the equipment that will be available for the volunteers to use. Trash bags and other supplies will be provided by SSCC. Participants are asked to bring their own gloves if available; otherwise, they will be provided.
The scope of the cleanup includes the tee box, fairway, rough and wooded areas, and the greens; minor divot repair; trash and stick pickup; and collecting stray balls to recycle for use on the driving range; among others.
Volunteers will have the use of one cart each, contingent on the weather that day, and will take to the course at 8 a.m. They will return to the first tee when a horn is sounded at 11 a.m.
Those wishing to volunteer may sign up in the Pro Shop or online at https://www.friendsofsscc.org/.
