South Shore Conservatory Application Call for Dave Jodka Scholarship for Future Rockers

May 17, 2024 By SouthShore Conservatory

South Shore Conservatory (SSC) invites high school drummers and guitarists to apply to audition for the Dave Jodka Scholarship for Future Rockers.  The scholarship provides a unique opportunity for rock students from all backgrounds to learn the art and business of contemporary and rock music and experience the love of music that Dave Jodka, a South Shore rock aficionado, inspired in his family and in his life before he passed in 2014. Auditions are June 12 from 6-9 pm at SSC’s One Conservatory Drive campus.

Established in 2016, the Future Rockers scholarship, underwritten in Jodka’s memory, offers high school musicians the opportunity to participate in a high quality, coached, committed rock band at SSC. The band represents SSC and Future Rockers in the community with public performances at venues such as The Middle East, New World Tavern, the C-Note, and more. They have been featured on WCVB’s Five for Good, and recorded several albums and EPs that can be found on Spotify and Bandcamp.

Drummers and guitarists applying should possess a good mastery of their instrument (at least three years of study), a true passion for working with an ensemble and performing in public and must be willing to commit to the band for a 12-month period from June 2024 through June 2025.  Auditionees should prepare the Mark Ronson/Amy Winehouse version of “Valerie” in Eb, the Beatles’ “Don’t Let Me Down” in E to play with current band members, and one song of their choice to be played with a track or solo.

The band will perform at the tenth annual Dave Jodka Mad Love Music Festival on October 13, 2024 at SSC’s Jane Carr Amphitheater in Hingham, and perform at other venues throughout the year.  Starting in June of 2024, students must commit to one hour a week of coaching on Wednesdays from 7-8 pm at SSC’s Hingham campus, at One Conservatory Drive. Coaching will continue through the summer (with some flexibility), culminating in a three-day intensive.

Interested musicians must complete the form at https://sscmusic.org/mad-love-scholarship/ by June 5, 2024.   For more information, contact Ryan McNeice at r.mcneice@sscmusic.org
