The morning of March 26, 2022, was Volunteer Clean-Up Day at the South Shore Country Club (SSCC) sponsored by the Friends of the South Shore Country Club. It is a by-gone tradition of course remediation for all friends, golfers and non-golfers of SSCC to help get the season started. The turnout was robust with over 50 participants including permit holders, frequent patrons and interested community members along with enthusiastic representation from the boys and girls High School Golf Team and the local Hingham Girl’s Scout Troop.

After encouraging words from Kevin Whalen, Executive Director, and detailed instruction from Jake Silva, Course Superintendent, the participants hit the course eager to make a difference. All participants were divided into teams, and with specific hole assignments, set out under perfect early Spring weather conditions for the task at hand. The Grounds Team outfitted carts with divot mix for repair, rakes for bunkers, leaves and sticks, barrels for debris and plenty of garbage bags for trash pick- up. After 3 hours of meticulous attention, the entire course was covered from tee to green and surrounding perimeter areas. Dozens of full barrels of debris, trash bags and utility vehicles full of wood scrap were collected in a finely tuned campaign to beautify the course we are so uniquely fortunate to call our SSCC.

Not to be overlooked was Jake’s full compliment of grounds crew personnel supporting all participants with a continuing supply of tools, ground repair material, gloves, in addition to hauling debris to and from all morning to aid the effort.

The day was a huge success on a number of levels; this initial work not only puts the cleaning effort way ahead of the curve this time of year, it allows the grounds crew to focus on larger more relevant and technical projects to enhance the overall experience at our SSCC. We wish to thank the Country Club Management Committee, Kevin Whalen, Jake Silva and his Crew along with Golf Pro Chris Riley and all the individual participants for their hard work and dedication to make SSCC the best it can be.
