Susan Seibert Hess (aka Nana) passed away May 22 at home in Cohasset after a long and incredibly courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma. She was born May 23, 1942 in Port Huron, Michigan to Robert Miller Seibert and Dorthea Koehlinger Seibert. The first of three daughters, she is survived by her husband Tom and her sons Rob (Sue) of Cohasset, John (Jennifer) of Portland, Oregon, and Andrew (Megan) of Lexington, Virginia and her sister Linda Weaver of Fort Gratiot, Michigan.
The loves of her life were her six grandchildren! Sam and Sophia, Henry and Adelaide, and Graham and Avery. They all survive her. A PROUD alum of Michigan State University, she also holds graduate degrees in elementary and special education from Wayne State and later from Bridgewater State Universities. After a brief retirement from Port Huron schools following a family move to Higham in 1982, she taught third grade for 25 years at Hingham’s Foster School.
Following her final retirement from Foster in 2008, she decided that she wanted to see the world… and did. Her motto was, “Have passport…will travel.” She visited multiple far-away and exotic places like India (twice), China, and Europe (many times), often accompanying Tom and all three sons on business-related trips.
She was a volunteer at the Massachusetts State House serving proudly as a Doric Docent where she guided visiting tours, which often included school groups from all over New England. She was also a volunteer at the Hingham Historical Society, were she led tours of the Old Ordinary, a tavern and inn frequently visited by many of our Founding Fathers.
A forty-two year member of the Episcopal Parish of Saint John the Evangelist in Hingham, Susan was active in many ways including a term on the Vestry where she headed up Youth and Education Programs.
