Boston Globe arts and entertainment reporter Mark Shanahan will be in conversation with the stars of the award-winning documentary Life in the Doghouse about their new book, FOREVER HOME, Thursday, October 27th, 7 PM.
Danny Robertshaw and Ron Danta have rescued, rehabilitated, and then adopted out over 13,000 abandoned and abused dogs—right from their own home. More than 100 dogs live under their roof with them at any one time because, they say, an abused or neglected dog can best recover and learn to trust again when it is nurtured in a loving environment.
Now, with Hingham’s own Larry Lindner, a New York Times bestselling writer, they have penned a book about their experience that delves into how they found their way to each other and how they came to found Danny & Ron’s Rescue, one of the most successful dog rescues in the world. FOREVER HOME is not just their story and the stories of many of the dogs that have come into their lives. It’s also a message of acceptance, kindness, and, of course, love. It’s a reminder that hope and joy can arise from the darkest circumstances, and that we all can make the world a better place for ourselves and our animal friends.
Brooke Shields says of FOREVER HOME: “I loved reading this beautiful book and learning how Danny & Ron have dedicated their lives to helping and caring for our most precious and helpless creatures.” International bestselling author Rita Mae Brown calls the book “a road map for living your best, most compassionate life.” And the best-selling author of Cold Mountain, Charles Frazier, says that FOREVER HOME “offers a profoundly compelling and candid account of the path Danny and Ron have walked together.” In a starred review, Booklist calls the work an “unforgettable, gut-wrenching story of how…Robertshaw and Danta opened their hearts, homes, lives, and wallets to rescue over 13,000 dogs….These two angels disguised as humans offer so much hope and love for animals—and invaluable lessons for readers.”
On the evening of Thursday, October 27th, at 7 PM, Danny and Ron will appear virtually to launch their book — joined by Larry in person. They will be in conversation with Boston Globe arts and entertainment reporter Mark Shanahan (whose own delightfully high-strung rescue dog Addie is “part collie and part Lucille Ball”). They will also be in conversation with you. The $40 ticket price will cover the cost of the book (each attendee will receive a copy signed by Danny and Ron), wine and beer, and hors d’oeuvres. While the “conversation” doesn’t begin until 7, doors will open at 6:30 for those who show up thirsty and hungry. If the event sells out, the Friends of Hingham Cemetery and co-sponsor Buttonwood Books and Toys will jointly donate $1,000 to Danny & Ron’s Rescue.
For those who might feel separation anxiety when away from their dogs, gentle golden retriever Rosie, a therapy dog belonging to Friends of Hingham Cemetery Board member Barbara Nicosia, will be on hand for petting and warm snuggles.
