Grand Marshal, Scott McMillan

June 21, 2024 Submitted by the 4th of July Parade Committee

The Hingham 4th of July Parade Committee today announced their selection of Scott McMillan as Grand Marshal of the 2024 Parade. Scott is a life-long prominent member of the Hingham community and had previously been recognized for his service with the awards of Veteran of the Year (2009) and Citizen of the Year (2015). Now, as Grand Marshal of the 4 th of July Parade, Scott is deservedly the first member of the community to achieve the Hingham equivalent of the Triple Crown! While shocked when informed of the honor by long-time Parade Committee Chairperson, Jim Murphy, Scott wondered how he might manage the Parade day since he was already committed to marching in the Parade with the veterans! Then, in his typical fashion of service, he turned back to the task in hand of planting flags with Committee member Tom Hoffman in front of the police station as part of National Police Week.

Scott McMillan grew up and still resides on Fort Hill Street in Hingham. After graduating from Hingham High School in 1968, Scott served his country in the Marines before returning to serve in Hingham Fire Department from 1973 to 2003. Scott continues to serve the Town in a number of capacities, as ranger of Bare Cove Park where he is a familiar and committed presence in his truck for regulars and visitors alike. Scott also serves as Chairman of the Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Hall and is active in many formal activities in support of veterans’ needs and causes. However, Scott is also known for a deeper personal commitment to each veteran and their family to ensure their service is honored and not forgotten.

Scott and his wife Cheryl have been life-long residents of Fort Hill Street, convenient to his work in Bare Cove Park, and have reared their 2 sons there. Supported by Cheryl, Scott McMillan’s life is one of intention, commitment and service to his community, the Town of Hingham, and for that his is unanimously to complete his Hingham Triple Crown and serve as Grand Marshal of the Hingham 2024 4th of July Parade.

The Hingham 4th of July Parade Committee is an all-volunteer committee charged with organizing, funding, and marshalling the annual parade, carrying on a town tradition first enacted in 1842. For news of Parade Committee activities, follow the committee on social media.
