While a celebration is in order once the transition of the water system from Aquarion Water Company to Town of Hingham ownership is complete at the end of this week, COVID-19 makes that difficult to do at this time, according to Selectmen Chair Mary Power.
"It's hard to believe that after nine years [working on the acquisition] we can say [on June 28] that in 72 hours the Town of Hingham will own its own water company again after 132 years [when the town first owned the water company]," Power said at last night's remote board meeting. "Rather than celebrate during the pandemic when we couldn't do it justice, we may be able to have a townwide celebration in the fall in consideration of this very significant milestone."
In the meantime, Suez Water Environmental Services (SUEZ) -- the newly hired water system operator -- will host a Zoom meeting with Hingham, Hull, and Cohasset officials to get acquainted, soon after the transition is complete.
