Across from the Liberty Pole Road on Main Street there is a large tract of land belonging to the Hingham Water Company. The land, once owned by Nehemiah Cushing was in Cushing family for over 200 years ending with Edward S. The others who lived there after that were all familiar Hingham names: Kress, Newcomb, and Leavitt. In 1934 there were a series of set fires in town. The Hingham Journal reported that this house, barn and all the outbuildings were destroyed. The foundation and dirt road are still there, and the road is known as the “Cutthroat” road because a former owner was found dead in the house with his throat slit, supposedly by himself. The photo is from the archives of the Hingham Historical Society .
