January 4 is the start of 13 Saturdays of the Winter Hingham Farmers Market. Located at 204 Union Street at the Wompatuck State Park Visitor Center, each week shoppers will find some 25 vendors, both indoors and outside.
Market organizers are excited to welcome new vendors to the roster of long-time favorites. Aeonian Farm and Teal Farm provide their own freshly picked produce while also featuring selections from other local growers to complement their own harvests. Fresh spinach, arugula, and lettuces are a gift during these winter months. Stop by from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to shop, enjoy the beautiful trails and cozy fireplace, and say hi to your neighbors.
Hingham Farmers Market has undergone a leadership change after the sudden death of Mark Cullings, who served as president for 25 years. Under the guidance of Vice President Mary Frances Barry, the market has been successfully supported in Mark’s absence. She led the board, which elected Beverley Vernon as president and Kate Pope-Smith as vice president.
Pope-Smith has volunteered with the market for 8 years and prepared the Market Matters newsletter for 7 of them. Pope-Smith recognizes the help of volunteers. “The Market community is a joy to work with. Volunteer ideas are what are going to continue to improve the market,” she said.
Barry, a volunteer for 10 years, will continue to serve on the board. “As a volunteer, the market gets in your blood. We have a wonderful market manager who handles the daily administration with great knowledge and expertise. It is a pleasure to work with Gretchen Roth. The Market misses Mark Cullings, but we know it will go forward with the community focus that Mark encouraged.”
Vernon said, “I know the market is in good shape and will continue to provide the vendors with a successful place to create a community for their businesses. To ensure the HFM’s best-in-class experience for market-goers and vendors alike, our SNAP program and general setup represent an opportunity for volunteers to join the organization.” Contact Bev Vernon at In**@hi*****************.org to express your interest.
The HFM additionally recognizes the support of its Hingham sponsors. The HFM would not be the robust market that it is without the support of Fruit Center Marketplace, Hingham Institution for Savings, and Zona Brothers Barber Shop. “We are grateful for their continued support,” Vernon said.
The HFM is a 501C6 organization. Donations in Mark Cullings’ memory may addressed to Bev Vernon at 31 School St., Hingham, MA 02043. Sign up for the Thursday Market Matters newsletter and follow the vendors on Facebook and Instagram at HinghamFarmersMarket.org.
